Westminster is an area located within City of Westminster in London.
Edward the Confessor (reigned 1042-1066) had a church (or minster) built on Thorney Island in the Thames, west of what was then London (the basis of the present City of London). This became known as Westminster.
Westminster is the site of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, the Supreme Court and many UK Government offices.
