Mayor for 1943-44[]

It appears that the "Jelks" story from the BBC site was hearsay. I can find no evidence of anyone called Jelks on the borough council. Fortunately an obituary from 1962 filled the void. Alfred William (or William Alfred) Wynn (29 June 1885 - 15 January 1961) was a taxi driver for 50+ years and 30+ years on Islington council.Lozleader (talk) 21:24, April 11, 2017 (UTC)

But doing a quick search came across [1] and [2] among others - so probably some conflation or connection. Jackiespeel (talk) 22:08, April 11, 2017 (UTC)
Well Lt Cmdr Jelks could indeed be from the billiard dynasty and have suggested his father was mayor or the writer might have got the impression. Clearly they were a family of some import in the borough. This seems to the definitive work on the company [3] Lozleader (talk) 22:18, April 11, 2017 (UTC)
I think there was a gap in the sequence when I came across the Jelks reference so assumed the placement. There may well have been some business connection with (members of) the council - but we will have to await the relevant passer-by contributor. Jackiespeel (talk) 09:27, April 12, 2017 (UTC)

So - should a brief explanatory note be added to the page, as someone else may ask? Jackiespeel (talk) 21:27, April 13, 2017 (UTC)

Carefully worded, the person reciting the anecdote thought it to be true. Lozleader (talk) 21:43, April 13, 2017 (UTC)
A quick check - this seems to be the only appearance of the Lieutenant Commander/Captain- and a search on [4] yields only a Petty Officer Steward, Arthur Graham who according to [5] died in December 1943.

[6] has a Robert Fergus Jenks as captain of HMS Quail - more details here [7].

'Something very odd here' then. Jackiespeel (talk) 09:55, April 14, 2017 (UTC)

Robert Fergus Jenks was the second son of Sir Maurice Jenks, 1st Baronet who was Lord Mayor of London for 1931-32. Whether he was related to the Islington billiard table makers I don't know. Case closed. Lozleader (talk) 10:24, April 14, 2017 (UTC)
As the names #are# different, we will assume a typographical error/confusion. Jackiespeel (talk) 09:11, April 18, 2017 (UTC)

Useful source of information[]

There are 'a number' of references to various Islington mayors and aldermen here. Jackiespeel (talk) 17:59, September 12, 2018 (UTC)
