Shoreditch is an area in East End of London, in the London Borough of Hackney.
Name[]
Shoreditch derives from the Saxon word Soersditch, interpreted as Sewer Ditch, thought to be a reference to the watercourse of the River Walbrook,[1] It was also known as Holywell, named from a well in Holywell Street, near the Benedictine nunnery of St. John Baptist.[2]
History[]
Shoreditch first developed at the intersection of two Roman roads, Old Street and Kingsland Road.[3] which was a small rural village situated on the outskirts of London.[4]
By the 19th century, Shoreditch was overcrowded and rife with poverty and crime.[5]
Transport[]
London Buses provides all local bus services across the district: routes 8, 135, 205, 388, N8 and N205 on Great Eastern Street and Bishopsgate; routes 26, 35, 47, 48, 67, 78 and N26 on Shoreditch High Street; and routes 55, 149, 242, 243 and N55 on Old Street.
