1743 Formed as a civil parish.
1855 Vestry became an electing authority to the Metropolitan Board of Works
1889 became part of the County of London
1900 became a metropolitan borough. 1965 abolished and merged into London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
It had 48 elected vestrymen in 4 wards - East and North had 9 each and West and South 15 each. Nominated 1 member to the London County Council.
