Formed under the Metropolis Management Act 1855 previously part of the Hundred of Brixton and County of Surrey: included exclave of Penge. Battersea was in the Wandsworth District Board of Works and Penge in the Lewisham District Board of Works. Battersea Town Hall was on Lavender Hill, and is now the Battersea Arts Centre. 1889 Local Government Act formed the County of London and Battesea transferred to the new county. It had four wards and 120 elected vestrymen.

Under the London Government Act 1899 the parish became the Metropolitan Borough of Battersea. 1965 Amalgamaged with parts of Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth to form London Borough of Wandsworth.
