The Inner London Education Authority was created in 1964, coming into existence in 1965. It was to take on the educational functions of the former London County Council when the Greater London Council was set up - the outer London boroughs being educational authorities.
It consisted of GLC members for the twelve Inner London Boroughs as well as co-opted members. With the abolition of the GLC in 1986 a directly-elected authority was elected in 1986. This was the only election before its final abolition.
The ILEA was wound up in 1990, the London Residuary Body looking after the disposal of its residual property.
