Ilford is a major suburban town in Greater London, and is the administrative headquarters of the London Borough of Redbridge, and is very close to London proper. It is identified in the London Plan as one of the major metropolitan centres. It is in East London and includes Redbridge, Loxford, Cranbrook, Newbury Park, Gants Hill, Seven Kings, Fairlop, Goodmayes. Its growth was fueled by the arrival of the railways.
The name was recorded in the Domesday Book, and refers to a ford over the River Roding.
