Haggerston is an area in East London and is in both the London Borough of Hackney,[1] and is also an electoral ward in Hackney.[2] Neighbouring parts of Tower Hamlets are sometimes also perceived as part of the area.

It is north of Bethnal Green, west of Hackney and Cambridge Heath, east of Hoxton and De Beauvoir Town, and south of Dalston.

Haggerston is the location of Broadway Market, Hackney City Farm, Suleymaniye Mosque

Name

Haggerston was first recorded in Domesday Book as Hergotestane; the name probably derives from a Saxon farmer called Hærgod, who either had a ‘ton’ (farmstead) here or a stone that marked the boundary of his land. The name of Haggerston however had largely dropped out of common usage following World War 2 and was known as ‘south Hackney’ pre-2010 before the reopening of Haggerston Station as part of the northern extension of the East London Line.[3]

Following the reopening of the station, Haggerston has been attracting tech start ups over from nearly Silicon Roundabout on Old Street, with some people referring the area as "Hackerston".[4]

Geography

Haggerston is defined as stretching from Hoxton Station in the south to the northern edge of Stonebridge Garden, reaching to London Fields to the east, and running up Kingsland Road and then De Beauvoir Road to the west.[5]

Transport

It is served by Haggerston Station on the London Overground East London Line.

London Buses routes 26, 55, 149, 236, 242, 243, 394, and night routes N26, N55 and N242 all serve Haggerston.

The Cat & Mutton Bridge spans over the Regents Canal, which still carries the name of a former alehouse which stood on the site at the extreme right, closed since at least 1919. The present pub on a new site was built in 1909 as the Sir Walter Scott but is now known as La Vie en Rose.[6]
