Custom House is an area in the London Borough of Newham, in East London. It is located in the E16 postcode.
History[]
The Connaught Tavern dates back to 1881 and is believed to be haunted. Although the ghost has not been seen for years, legend says the tavern was haunted by the aunt of a former landlord, who committed suicide in the late 19th century in a bedroom on the second floor.[1]
A slight population decline to 1931 paled into insignificance by the devastation wrought on this area in World War II, when bombing destroyed in many cases entire streets and forced large-scale evacuation.[2]
The area is marked in early 20th century maps as the eastern half of Canning Town.[3]
The ExCeL London was designed by Moxley Architects and built by Sir Robert McAlpine. It opened in November 2000.[4][5] In May 2008 it was acquired by Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company. Phase II of development, which included building London's first International Convention Centre (ICC) and creating an "eastern arrival experience", was completed on 1 May 2010. In 2015 ExCeL announced the opening of CentrEd at ExCeL,[6]
It was announced on 24 March 2020 that the centre was to be temporarily converted into the 4,000-bed NHS Nightingale Hospital as part of the response to the 2020 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Military engineers and contractors supported the erection of the facility, and army medics assisted the NHS nurses, doctors and other staff.[7] The Nightingale was opened on 3 April 2020 by Charles, Prince of Wales via videolink.[8]
